Ecological problems, permanent stress and poor nutrition do their job: every year the number of allergy sufferers is rapidly growing. Even a healthy person is not immune to allergies. According to the statistics, every 4th big city dweller is intimately familiar with allergy. That is why today we decided to give some useful interior tops that might save your home from allergens and make you feel comfortable.
1. Choose the right finishing materials
For instance, you should opt for water dispersion paints: they are resistant to stains and don’t give off any chemical smells. When it comes to wallpaper, give preference to smooth and cellulose-based, since textile and textured wallpaper accumulates dust. As for flooring materials, it would be a good idea to choose parquet boards, ceramic tiles or cork.
2. Take care about your bed
Feathers, down, wool, and coir are extremely difficult to clean and hence can become very powerful allergens. So pick pillows, blankets and a mattress made from hypoallergenic materials or complemented with special slip covers for people with allergies – they do not allow water, bacteria and viruses to penetrate. And no matter what you finally choose, remember that a mattress should be replaced once in a decade, a pillow – every fifth year, and bed linen should be washed every week at or above 60 degrees Celsius.
3. Minimize home textile
Blankets, plaids, couch pillows and shaggy rugs look and feel cozy and great, but they also accumulate dust like a sponge absorbs water. If you can’t do without them at all, then keep such stuff in a closet and take only when you need it. For the same reason you should try to minimize the number of upholstered furniture pieces in your home or choose leather upholstery; though it’s pretty expensive, you’d feel much better once you get it.
4. Let domestic appliances help you
An air conditioner and a humidifier have become permanent guests in homes of allergy sufferers. One more way to create a hypoallergenic oasis in your apartment is to install a ventilation system with filters of delicate cleaning. They not just eliminate bed smells and do not allow harmful substances to penetrate into your home, but also clean the air from fine dust and pollen.
5. Seek compromise in your passion for indoor plants and pets
If you’re an allergy sufferer, your choice is non-blooming plants with no pollen, such as cacti and other succulents. And remember that you might suffer not from a plant itself, but from the soil it grows in – fungi can form in it quite easily. In this case try to grow hydroponic plants that do not need soil for living.
As for pets, there’s a common misconception that only long hairs can cause allergy. Well, actually even fish food can make a person with allergies suffer. That is why before introducing a pet into your home make sure you can share your territory with this species. And if hairs are your main foe, then a hairless cat is what you need!
6. Clean your home thoroughly
Allergy sufferers have to wipe all the horizontal surfaces several times a week. That is why it goes without saying that they should avoid open racks and much décor and keep books only in closed bookcases. All the drawers and wardrobes should be tightly shut, with the exception of weekly airing.
And of course, people with allergies need to have powerful vacuum cleaners with filters that can keep even finest dust. Modern vacuum cleaners are hermetic and do not allow air or dust leak, and their filters neither need servicing nor replacement, which means that you won’t contact with dust at all. Such an appliance can be used once or twice a week, while the best option for daily cleaning is a vacuum-cleaning robot.
7. Be careful with domestic chemicals
Firstly, make sure you keep all your chemicals in a separate cabinet and tightly shut all the lids after each use, even if this detergent is hypoallergenic and eco-friendly. Always wear rubber gloves when cleaning your home, properly air the room after using chemicals and clean your face and hands thoroughly. And if any contacts with chemicals sound like a disaster for you, then ammonia, soda, vinegar and mustard are your win-win options!
