Key Measurements Of Kitchen Layout Planning: Part 2

They say that a well-though-out kitchen layout saves about 30% of time you spend on food preparation. Hence this process must be treated with maximum care and attention. In this article we continue to find out the key measurements required for planning a kitchen layout.

Recommendable distance between kitchen upper cabinets and countertop

The interiors of upper cabinets should be well seen. Here the key point is your height – if you need to reach out or even jump to get something from the upper cabinet, it would be annoying and stressful.

An ideal distance between kitchen upper cabinets and countertop is 40 cm. Bigger distance is a waste of space, while having a smaller one can result into failing to arrange your basic appliances: blenders, mixers, a breadmaker and a microwave oven.

Work triangle

The so-called work triangle consists of 3 main functional kitchen zones: storage, preparation and cooking. An efficient total length of all sides of the work triangle mustn’t exceed 7 meters. Failing this, cooking and cleaning processes will turn into a tiring marathon. As for the length of triangle’s sides, they can vary from 120 to 230 cm each, but ideally they all must be practically equal.

Before picking your kitchen set design, you should apply a physics method of thought experiment – try to imagine all the basic cooking processes and your movement pattern. There must be nothing on your way: no sharp furniture corners, no open doors or cabinets, no chairs.

Remember that it’s not recommended to put a stove next to the sink, since water splashes can put out the fire. Neither should it be placed by the window, since curtains can be set on fire by strong wind.

Recommendable width of kitchen walkways

According to basic comfort principles and following the fire safety rules, the minimum width of kitchen walkways must be 90 cm. As for the distance between 2 worktops, it’s worth having a 100-cm–wide walkway to ensure convenient opening of base cabinets. By the way, professional designers strongly advise to have drawers instead of base cabinets – they’re far more convenient than shelves located a little higher than the floor level.
