Besides obvious advantages of stretch ceilings, which we discussed in the previous post, they certainly have a few drawbacks. In this article we’ll try to give you the most detailed information regarding the flaws of stretch ceilings.
Disadvantages of stretch ceilings
Limited choice of lamps
Firstly, stretch ceilings limit your choice of lighting fixtures. The thing is that their power mustn’t exceed 40 watts and their luminaries should be thermally insulated. Otherwise, after a little while stains can appear around the lamps on the ceiling.
One more drawback of stretch ceilings is the sound of clapping you can hear when the window and room door are opened. This sound is a result of a sharp drop of pressure between your structural (primary) and dropped (stretch) ceiling: the latter gets attracted to the former by draft. This problem is closely connected with the quality of installation. If the construction crew did their job well, this issue will never arise. And it’s relevant only to PVC ceilings – non-PVC stretch ceilings do not produce such an effect.
PVC stretch ceilings are not ecologically safe. Here the key issue is the quality of the film. If the material quality meets all safety requirements, it won’;t have any smell at all or it will be pretty faint and will disappear within a few days. Such ceilings are seen as safe even for toddler rooms.
If the chemical smell takes a couple of weeks to disappear after installation, the quality of the film is regarded as medium, and such a ceiling can be installed only in public areas of your home – bathroom, kitchen or corridor. While in bedrooms you’d better do without such a ceiling.
And if 2 weeks passed after installation and you still feel a strong sweet chemical smell, ecological safety of the canvas is out of the question. Staying in such a room is dangerous for health, and it must be immediately disassembled and replaced.
When choosing the right material for a stretched ceiling, remember that there are 2 main types – PVC films and non-PVC polyester canvas. The latter is more expensive, but eco-safe.
Stretch ceilings are manufactured in relatively small sizes of canvas, and when it comes to big rooms, it’s almost impossible to install a stretch ceiling without visible seams between different pieces of film.
Mauvais ton issues
Of course, it’s a subjective judgment, but some designers refuse to install stretch ceilings at all, regarding them as mauvais ton. The strongest critique is related to multicolor and multilevel types. Many decorators accept only matte white options to get an even beautiful ceiling without plastering. There is also a stylish option to install concealed lighting system between the structural and white dropped ceiling to create an illusion of daylight.
