Toxic Materials In Your Home – Find And Eliminate (Part 2)

A man’s home is his castle, they say. But is this statement always absolutely true? Sometimes far more threats are hiding inside, not outside our homes. How to find and eliminate them? We’re continuing our overview of toxic materials in our homes.

Clean the carpet properly

It’s amazing what the modern market of household chemicals can offer: detergents removing most complicated stains in the blink of an eye, detergents with magical scents, special fire-resistant compositions…  Either of them is so nice in its own way and we’re willing to clean and wipe our carpet with all of them at a time. But you should take into account that such powerful cleaners contain a whole bunch of harmful substances that can cause headaches, malaise, allergy and asthma. How to treat these consequences? Once the carpet was cleaned with household chemicals, it must be thoroughly dried out and aired outdoors – not on a drying rack in your corridor.

And to protect yourself for 100%, it’s worth doing without chemicals at all. Of course, eco-friendly cleaners are far more expensive, but this is actually the price for our health. And if your budget is limited, try natural time-tested home recipes that have helped mistresses make their homes neat and tidy for centuries. Or at least set your choice upon “light” chemicals, which at least don’t say that you should use them with your windows open.

Get rid of chipboard

Chipboard furniture is very popular due to its fair price. But the adhesive used in the production of this material frequently contains an extremely dangerous carcinogen – formaldehyde. It can be the reason for the emergence of asthma, lung diseases, burning eyes and throat. To protect your family, don’t save on your own health and buy the furniture made from natural materials. Wood is particularly welcome. And if your apartment already features chipboard pieces and there’s no chance to replace them in the near future, at least put as many houseplants as possible and air this room as often as you can.

Replace the moldings

Such a trivial and seemingly harmless thing as a crown molding can also pose threat to people. The thing is that some of them (especially decorative ones) can be a source of an extremely harmful substance – styrene. It’s toxic, causes nausea and headache, and has a negative impact on functioning of liver and the chemical composition of blood. To escape from these effects of styrene, make sure that the crown moldings you buy are made from eco-friendly materials.

Say goodbye to vinyl wallpaper

Among all types of wallpaper, vinyl come second to paper ones. Conscientious manufacturers do not recommend using them in toddler rooms and bedrooms, but their affordable price, easy maintenance and a wide range of colors, patterns and textures often outweigh ecological aspects. The thing is that this material is completely non-breathable (with the exception of special porous types), which facilitates the emergence of allergic reactions and headaches. Just to be on the safe side, do not use this material in residential spaces at all: it’s worth giving preference to wooden panels, or textile or paper wallpaper.
